Mizoram’s ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has formally announced its party spokesperson, K Laltluangkima, as its official nominee for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. The election for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat is scheduled to take place on June 18.
The announcement was made by ZPM Vice-President C Lalnunnema during an official programme held at the party headquarters in Aizawl, where Laltluangkima was formally introduced. While the ruling party has finalized its contender, opposition parties have yet to declare their respective candidates.
According to party spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei, the Congress, which currently holds only a single seat in the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly, is unlikely to contest the election. Meanwhile, the main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), is expected to announce its candidate shortly, as confirmed by party treasurer Lalruatkima.
The political math heavily favors the ruling party. In the current 40-member Assembly, the ZPM holds a comfortable majority with 27 MLAs. The opposition MNF holds 10 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has two legislators.
The Election Commission recently announced elections for 24 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states. This includes one seat each in four Northeastern states: Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram. Given the current composition of the state assembly, the ZPM’s nominee enters the race with a significant mathematical advantage.
