Mizoram’s ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) on Wednesday announced party spokesperson K Laltluangkima as its candidate for the upcoming Rajya Sabha election from the state.

The announcement was made by ZPM vice-president C. Lalnunnema during a function held at the party’s office in Aizawl. Laltluangkima has been officially nominated by the party for the election to Mizoram’s lone Rajya Sabha seat, which is scheduled to be held on June 18.

Opposition parties are yet to announce their candidates for the election.

The Congress, which currently has only one member in the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly, is unlikely to field a candidate, according to party spokesperson Lalremruata Renthlei.

In the present Assembly, the ZPM enjoys a comfortable majority with 27 legislators. The main opposition party, the Mizo National Front (MNF), has 10 members, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has two legislators.

Meanwhile, the MNF is expected to announce its candidate soon. Party treasurer Lalruatkima indicated that the party is likely to contest the election.

With its numerical strength in the Assembly, the ZPM is considered to be in a strong position in the upcoming Rajya Sabha poll.
