Mizoram is actively addressing substance abuse across the state, currently operating 48 care and rehabilitation centres that serve 5,224 individuals struggling with drug addiction. To support these operational facilities, the state government has extended financial assistance amounting to Rs 42 lakh during the current year. In addition to long-term rehabilitation facilities, the state’s ‘Hulhliap’ short-stay centre—a specialized detoxification facility launched in June last year at the Synod Revival camping centre in Neihbawi near Aizawl—has successfully admitted and treated 2,255 people across nine completed batches. Built to accommodate around 200 inmates at a time, the Hulhliap initiative has seen government expenditure exceed Rs 3.86 crore, supplemented by Rs 1.34 lakh in external funding sources. At the facility, inmates undergo an initial 15-day medical detoxification program managed by doctors, nurses, and counselors, which is subsequently followed by targeted spiritual counseling. Upon completing their temporary stay at the Hulhliap center, recovering individuals are either reunited with their families or referred to specialized long-term rehabilitation centres to continue their recovery journey.
