Mizoram on Tuesday observed ‘Remna Ni’ to celebrate the Ruby Jubilee (40th anniversary) of the historic 1986 Mizo Peace Accord, a landmark agreement between the Mizo National Front (MNF) and the Government of India that ended two decades of insurgency.
Leaders across the political spectrum hailed the state’s transformation into one of the most peaceful and progressive regions in the country.
Addressing a commemorative event in Aizawl, themed “From the Frontlines of ’66 to 40 Years of Peace,” Mizoram Governor Geneneral (Dr.) Vijay Kumar Singh lauded the treaty as a globally exemplary model for conflict resolution. As Chief Guest, he launched a new research project on the accord’s enduring legacy and encouraged Mizo youth to travel beyond the state to acquire new skills for future development.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma addressed the global Mizo diaspora, noting that real progress only began after the guns fell silent in 1986.
He highlighted the tangible fruits of this four-decade peace, proudly stating that Mizoram now boasts near-universal literacy, is ranked among India’s least corrupt states, and is experiencing a massive tourism boom due to its natural beauty and hospitality.
MNF president Zoramthanga recounted the darkest days of the 20-year insurgency including unprecedented Indian Air Force bombings on local villages and praised the accord as an enduring blueprint for other conflict-ridden regions.
Former Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who famously stepped down from his office to facilitate the 1986 agreement, emphasized that the lasting peace was not the achievement of any single entity. Instead, he attributed the historic success to the immense sacrifices and collective efforts of political parties, the Church, voluntary organizations, and the unwavering aspirations of the Mizo people.
