Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) has become the first Indian company to surpass 20 gigawatts (GW) of operational renewable energy capacity, marking a major milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The company achieved this feat through greenfield development and now generates over 52 billion units of clean electricity annually.
According to the company, this output accounts for nearly 3 per cent of India’s total electricity consumption and is sufficient to power major global cities such as New York for a year, or nearly the combined electricity demand of Mumbai and New Delhi. AGEL said the milestone was achieved within a decade of commissioning its first renewable project at Kamuthi in Tamil Nadu in 2016, making it one of the fastest large-scale renewable capacity additions in the country.
In FY26 alone, the company added 5,051 MW of capacity, the highest annual renewable expansion by any company outside China. Its current operational portfolio includes around 14.2 GW of solar, 2.7 GW of wind, and 3.3 GW of wind-solar hybrid projects.
AGEL has also commissioned 3.55 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems, which it described as the world’s largest deployment outside China. The company plans to expand its storage capacity further and aims to reach 50 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, supported by significant investments in battery storage systems.
Company Executive Director Sagar Adani said the milestone reflects disciplined execution and long-term vision, reinforcing India’s energy security while accelerating its clean energy transition.
