In a major push toward boosting state security and urban infrastructure, Mizoram Home Minister K Sapdanga has announced the upcoming recruitment of 444 personnel into the state’s security forces alongside a massive Rs 35-crore urban drainage project.
Speaking at a party function in Aizawl, Sapdanga revealed that the government will soon recruit 350 police personnel—comprising 200 armed personnel and 150 unarmed constables—along with 94 Home Guards. The minimum educational qualification for applicants is a Class 10 pass. Emphasizing transparency, the Minister firmly stated that selection will be based strictly on merit, physical capability, and discipline, warning that political recommendations or outside influences will play no role. While police roles are permanent, the selected Home Guards will initially be appointed for three years, subject to extension based on regulations.
Simultaneously, wearing his hat as the Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Minister, Sapdanga unveiled ‘Mission Urban Drain’ (MUD). This Rs 35-crore initiative is designed to tackle the chronic issues of landslides and flooding in Aizawl. Preliminary surveys by consultancy agencies have already identified development activities at 44 vulnerable sites spanning all 40 Assembly constituencies in the state.
The first phase of MUD will focus heavily on landslide-prone zones within the capital before expanding to other district headquarters. To ensure long-term sustainability, the government plans to design a comprehensive drainage master plan for Aizawl, systematically channeling wastewater from local drains into secondary systems and main drainage corridors to prevent overlapping works.
