Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially transitioned from the campaign trail to the corridors of power, marking the beginning of his second consecutive term with a clear message: the time for electioneering has passed, and the era of delivery has begun.
Immediately following his swearing-in, Sarma, accompanied by key cabinet colleagues, visited the memorial of Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister and a Bharat Ratna awardee. This symbolic gesture underscored the new administration’s intent to align its vision with the foundational values of state security and cultural protection championed by Bordoloi. Sarma emphasized that his government’s primary directive is to fulfill the promises outlined in the BJP’s election manifesto “in letter and spirit,” focusing heavily on the twin pillars of regional security and accelerated industrial development.
The Chief Minister’s first official acts include a high-level cabinet meeting to set the administrative pace and the scheduling of the 16th Assam Assembly session, expected to commence on May 21. Addressing the media, Sarma noted that the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various national leaders at his inauguration signals Assam’s rising prominence as a strategic hub for development in Northeast India.
With the ministry expansion deferred until after the initial assembly session, the current focus remains strictly on governance. Sarma’s assertion that “people now expect work from us” sets a high bar for accountability, positioning this term not just as a continuation of the previous five years, but as a dedicated push toward turning Assam into a national center for industrialization and progress.
