‘Mizoram Green Schools League’, a state-wide school cleanliness competition under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, was held in Aizawl on Wednesday.
Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Minister K. Sapdanga attended the event as the chief guest, while School Education Department Minister Dr. Vanlalthlana was present as the guest of honour.
The programme was chaired by K. Lalthawmmawia, Commissioner and Secretary, School Education Department.
Speaking on the occasion, Sapdanga, expressed his delight at the launch of the ‘Mizoram Green Schools League’, a joint initiative of the UD&PA and School Education Departments.
He noted that the initiative serves as an excellent platform to instill a love for cleanliness in school children, helping them integrate hygiene into their daily routines well into adulthood.
While acknowledging the substantial cash prizes attached to the competition, he emphasized that the true reward will be fostering a mindset that values cleanliness among students across various schools.
The UD&PA Minister further remarked that cleanliness and hygiene are primary indicators of development and progress. He stated that the ‘Mizoram Green Schools League’ aims to deeply root the desire for cleanliness in students, molding them to become leaders in keeping their schools, homes, and communities clean.
Asserting that preserving a clean and healthy environment for future generations is a major responsibility for everyone, he added that every individual—from children to adults—has a crucial role to play in fulfilling this duty.
Dr. Vanlalthlana, observed that Mizo youth have recently shown a strong awakening regarding cleanliness, often voluntarily forming groups to clean up dirty and neglected areas.
He commended these efforts by the youth and stressed the importance of sustaining this culture of cleanliness so that it remains exemplary for visitors, even after the arrival of railways in the state.
He assured that the School Education Department would put forth its best efforts to ensure the success of the Mizoram Green Schools League, adding that teachers and school staff must lead by example for their students.
During the launch, V. Lalsangliana, Commissioner and Secretary, UD&PA Department, explained the objectives behind organizing this state-wide school cleanliness competition under Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.
Jacob Lalawmpuia, State Mission Director, SBM(U) & Director, UD&PA, detailed the operational guidelines of the competition, and Pi Angela Zothanpuii, Director, School Education Department, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.The Mizoram Green Schools League will be conducted at the Block, District, and State levels.
