In one of the most significant narcotics recoveries in recent months, a joint operation by the Assam Rifles and Zokhawthar Police has led to the seizure of a massive consignment of methamphetamine tablets in Mizoram. The intercepted drugs, weighing approximately 9.462 kg, carry an estimated market value of ₹28.38 crore. The successful operation highlights the intensifying vigil along the Indo-Myanmar border to curb the flow of synthetic drugs into the country.
The Melbuk Gate is located along the World Bank Road in Zokhawthar. Acting on specific intelligence regarding the movement of contraband, security forces established a strategic checkpoint to intercept a suspected vehicle. Upon a thorough search of the transport, officials discovered the high-grade methamphetamine tablets concealed within the carriage.
Three individuals were taken into custody at the scene. According to official reports, the apprehended suspects include two Indian nationals and one Myanmar national. The involvement of a foreign national suggests an international link to the smuggling attempt, prompting authorities to investigate deeper into the cross-border syndicates operating in the region.
Following the seizure, the narcotics, the vehicle used for transport, and the three accused were formally handed over to the Zokhawthar Police Station in the Champhai district. Legal proceedings have been initiated under the relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Security agencies have noted that the “Golden Triangle” influence continues to pose a challenge to the Northeast, with Mizoram serving as a frequent transit point for synthetic stimulants. This latest bust is being hailed as a major blow to local distribution networks. Further investigation is currently underway to identify the intended recipients of the consignment and to trace the origin of the illegal shipment.
