Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Garima Gupta has rejected allegations that foreign nationals were included in the state’s electoral rolls, stating that the recently concluded Special Intensive Revision (SIR) found no such irregularities.
Speaking after the completion of the voter verification exercise, Gupta said the revision, conducted between May 20 and June 28, led to the complete digitisation of all enumeration forms and a thorough verification of electoral records.
According to the CEO, more than 46,000 names were deleted from the electoral rolls during the exercise after due verification.
Her remarks come in response to concerns raised by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), which had alleged a 121 per cent increase in the number of voters in Chakma-majority areas of southern Mizoram and questioned the inclusion of foreign nationals.
Gupta dismissed the allegations, saying there had been no abnormal rise in the number of voters and that the entire revision process was conducted in accordance with the Election Commission’s prescribed procedures.
She added that the Election Commission had not found any irregularities in the revised electoral rolls following the completion of the verification exercise.
