Train movement to Mizoram has been disrupted after heavy rainfall triggered soil erosion along a section of railway track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram. According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), around 70 metres of track on the Katakhal-Bairabi section were affected by erosion following heavy rain on the evening of September 3. Restoration work has already begun, but the absence of direct road access to the affected location is creating additional challenges and the repair is expected to take some time. Railway authorities said the situation is being assessed and restoration efforts are being closely monitored. Several train services have consequently been cancelled or short-originated. The affected services include the Guwahati-Sairang Express, Silchar-Bairabi Express, Sairang-Kolkata Express and Bairabi-Silchar Express scheduled to depart on September 4, as well as the Silchar-Sairang and Sairang-Silchar Express services scheduled for September 5. The Sairang-Guwahati Express and Sairang-Anand Vihar Terminal Express have also been short-originated from Hailakandi, with their services between Sairang and Hailakandi cancelled. Railway authorities have advised passengers to take note of the temporary changes as repair work continues. The disruption highlights the vulnerability of railway connectivity in the hilly Northeast to extreme weather and heavy rainfall, while restoration efforts are being undertaken to restore normal train movement to Mizoram as soon as possible.
