In a decisive move to counter the economic fallout of the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Mizoram government has rolled out a sweeping set of austerity and fuel-conservation measures. Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national appeal for economic prudence, the state’s General Administration Department has introduced a mandatory weekly “No Official Vehicle Day” alongside remote work structural shifts.
Under the newly issued directive, twenty per cent of the state’s government workforce will transition to a work-from-home model. To ensure that essential public services remain uninterrupted, departments are actively preparing staggered duty rosters. Crucial sectors—including healthcare, emergency response, water supply, and law and order—are strictly exempted from the remote work order to maintain public safety.
In tandem with the remote work policy, the capital city of Aizawl is introducing staggered office hours to mitigate heavy traffic congestion and minimize idling fuel usage. Furthermore, every Wednesday has been designated as “No Official Vehicle Day.” On this day, government officials and staff are strongly encouraged to walk or utilize public transit to commute to their respective offices.
State authorities highlighted that Mizoram’s geographical remoteness and high baseline transportation costs make it uniquely vulnerable to global energy supply chain disruptions. Beyond immediate fuel cuts, the government has mandated additional belt-tightening measures, including a reduction in VIP convoy sizes, a restriction on non-essential inter-state or foreign travel, and strict energy-saving protocols across all administrative offices. Officials emphasize that while these measures are temporary responses to global uncertainty, they establish a critical foundation for long-term sustainability in governance.
