The Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has announced a statewide “Black Day” protest on July 21 to oppose the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. The party alleges that the proposed legislation would impose stricter regulations on foreign funding and adversely affect churches, Christian organisations and non-governmental organisations that rely on overseas contributions.
Addressing a press conference in Aizawl, MPCC Treasurer Lalmalsawma Nghaka said the protest will be held across Mizoram at noon. He said the party has invited churches of various denominations, Christian organisations and members of the public to participate in the demonstration.
According to the Congress, the proposed amendments could significantly impact institutions engaged in social welfare, education and charitable activities that receive foreign contributions. The party contends that tighter funding regulations may hinder the functioning of these organisations and affect the services they provide to communities.
The MPCC has urged citizens to join the peaceful protest to express their concerns over the proposed changes. The demonstration is expected to take place simultaneously in different parts of the state.
The proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, has become a subject of political debate, with the Congress maintaining that the legislation requires broader consultation to address concerns raised by stakeholders. The protest on July 21 is expected to highlight these concerns and seek reconsideration of the proposed amendments.
