In a heartfelt tribute to the state’s longest-standing broadcaster, Mizoram Information and Public Relations Minister B Lalchhanzova has hailed All India Radio (AIR) Aizawl as a “vital guardian of Mizo identity.” Speaking during a musical concert held on May 5 as part of the station’s 90th-anniversary celebrations, the Minister emphasized the broadcaster’s indispensable role in preserving the unique culture and language of the Mizo people.

Minister Lalchhanzova commended AIR for its resilient journey, noting that the station has acted as a bulwark against the gradual erosion of indigenous traditions. He remarked that AIR has successfully evolved beyond its role as a conventional media platform to become a true custodian of heritage. By consistently promoting local literature and music, the broadcaster has played a significant part in instilling communal pride and fostering positive social values across generations.

The celebration also featured insights from Dr. Lalropuia, Director and Cluster Head of AIR Aizawl, who traced the storied evolution of the broadcaster. He reminded the audience that All India Radio has served as a primary communication link for the masses since before India’s independence. Even in the digital age, Dr. Lalropuia noted, AIR remains a crucial bridge between the government and its citizens, facilitating national development and aligning with the country’s broader vision for the future.

Originally established on June 8, 1936, with its headquarters in New Delhi, All India Radio has grown into a massive network of approximately 230 stations nationwide. The Aizawl station remains one of its most culturally significant hubs, catering to the specific linguistic and social needs of the region.

The 90th-anniversary festivities are set to continue throughout the week. A walkathon is scheduled for this coming Friday to engage the local community and promote the milestone. The celebrations will culminate in a grand commemorative event on June 8 at Vanapa Hall. Chief Minister Lalduhoma is expected to attend the main event as the Chief Guest, marking nearly a century of service by the broadcaster to the people of Mizoram.
