Maruti Suzuki India has commissioned a 1 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at its Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana as part of its efforts to strengthen clean energy utilisation and reduce carbon emissions.

The pilot project has been integrated into the facility’s internal electricity distribution network to store excess solar power generated during low-demand periods and make it available when required. The initiative addresses the challenge of unused solar energy generation during plant holidays and periods of reduced electricity demand.

In 2025, Maruti Suzuki installed a 20 MWp solar power project at the Kharkhoda facility. The newly commissioned battery storage system will help maximise the use of renewable energy while also improving grid stability.

Maruti Suzuki India Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the introduction of BESS reflects the company’s commitment to supporting India’s transition towards self-reliant and sustainable energy ecosystems. He added that the system, with an expected lifecycle of around 15 years, will help reduce nearly 54 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The company said it remains focused on lowering Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from its manufacturing operations, both in terms of carbon intensity and overall emissions, even as production volumes continue to increase. The initiative marks another step in Maruti Suzuki’s sustainability roadmap, combining renewable energy adoption with advanced energy management solutions for greener manufacturing.
