In one of the most significant strikes against the illegal drug trade in Northeast India, authorities in Mizoram’s Champhai district destroyed a massive consignment of narcotics valued at over ₹465 crore on Tuesday. This major disposal operation underscores the state’s intensified efforts to curb trafficking along the porous international border with Myanmar. The destruction follows a series of successful seizures made by the police between March and October 2025 and was carried out following mandatory clearance from the district court.

The destroyed haul paints a stark picture of the scale of trafficking in the region. The consignment included approximately 35.85 kg of heroin, valued at ₹71.7 crore, and a staggering 490.89 kg of methamphetamine worth over ₹392 crore. Additionally, smaller quantities of alprazolam were incinerated. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Aaquib characterized the exercise as a milestone in the district’s ongoing battle against substance abuse, noting that the value of destroyed drugs has surged significantly compared to the ₹117 crore disposed of last year.

The enforcement data for the previous year highlights the relentless pressure being applied to illegal networks. In 2025 alone, Mizoram Police registered 147 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. These operations led to the arrest of 260 individuals, including 58 foreign nationals from Myanmar. The momentum has not slowed in the new year; between January and mid-April 2026, authorities have already registered 47 new cases and arrested 76 more individuals, seizing substantial amounts of crystal meth and heroin in the process.

Beyond the numbers, officials are emphasizing the social and economic implications of these operations. Deputy Commissioner Aaquib stressed that sustaining this crackdown is vital not only for public health but also for the district’s reputation. As Champhai grows in popularity as a tourist destination, maintaining law and order is essential to ensuring a safe environment for visitors.

The administration has coupled these enforcement actions with a call for community vigilance. Authorities are urging local residents to act as the “eyes and ears” of the law by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal drug networks. By combining high-value seizures with grassroots awareness campaigns, Mizoram aims to dismantle the infrastructure of trafficking and protect its younger generation from the devastating impact of the narcotics trade.
