Mizoram has achieved a literacy rate of 99.8 percent, moving closer to the goal of achieving complete literacy in the State.
The achievement was highlighted at the 60th International Literacy Day programme held at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of School Education in Aizawl on Tuesday.
The programme was attended by MLA T. Lalhlimpuia as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, T. Lalhlimpuia said literacy in the present-day context is not limited to reading and writing, but also includes computer and digital literacy.
He emphasised the importance of continuing efforts in adult education and skill development.
Education Reforms Committee Working Chairman Prof. Lalbiakdiki Hnamte stressed the importance of the Mizo language in education and the need to preserve the state’s linguistic heritage.
Samagra Shiksha Deputy State Project Director Caroline Rinthanpuii Fanai said the ULLAS programme is being implemented to provide education to non-literate persons and further strengthen literacy efforts across the state.
Assistant Director of Adult Education, T. Lalremsiama, said International Literacy Day has been observed annually since its declaration by UNESCO in 1966, while Mizoram has been observing the day since 1976.
With the literacy rate now standing at 99.8 percent, Mizoram’s continued efforts through adult education, community participation and the ULLAS programme have brought the state significantly closer to achieving universal literacy.
