In a major push toward transforming Mizoram’s agricultural landscape, Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma chaired a high-level review meeting to expedite the implementation of the prestigious Ginger Unique Selling Proposition (USP) Project. The ambitious initiative, formally titled the “Project Mizoram Ginger Sustainable Cultivation & Value Chain Development,” is being executed with a total estimated outlay of ₹189.78 crore, backed by a multi-departmental convergence strategy.

The project will deploy a strategic “Hub-and-Spoke” model to maximize post-harvest efficiency. Mualkawi in the Champhai district has been selected as the main processing centre, which will oversee advanced operations such as oleoresin and oil extraction, branding, and packaging. To support this central facility, three smaller “Spoke Hubs” will be established at Tualcheng, Zotlang, and Vaphai. These decentralized units will manage primary post-harvest activities, including the cleaning, grading, slicing, and drying of raw ginger.

A key highlight of the meeting was the strict timeline set for infrastructure development. The installation of all necessary processing machinery is targeted for completion by the end of this year. Moving away from traditional public management, the state government has decided that these processing units will be operated by private investors, entrepreneurs, and local cooperative societies to ensure professional efficiency and market viability.

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) previously designated ginger as Mizoram’s core economic USP, recognizing its exceptional organic quality and low fiber content. To kickstart the infrastructure phase, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has already sanctioned ₹30.13 crore. Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized strict coordination among the five converging state departments to ensure seamless implementation, promising a new era of prosperity for the state’s ginger farmers.
