More than 80 families have been evacuated to safer locations in Mizoram after the Khawthlangtuipui River overflowed in Lunglei district following nearly a week of incessant rainfall, officials said.

The worst-hit area is Tlabung town, located near the Bangladesh border, where floodwaters submerged several houses. As many as 42 families were shifted to safer places after their homes were either fully or partially inundated. Another 40 families from Tipperaghat village under Tlabung subdivision were also evacuated after rising waters entered residential areas.

Besides flooding, continuous rainfall has triggered landslides, rockfalls and other rain-related incidents at more than 29 locations across the state. Authorities, however, confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far.

The heavy rains have also severely disrupted road connectivity. National Highway-54 remains blocked due to a massive landslide near Bualte village in Lunglei district. The blockage has stranded several tourists for the past four days and cut off the southern districts of Lawngtlai and Siaha from the rest of the state.

Similarly, the Aizawl–Thenzawl–Lunglei highway has become impassable after a major rockfall and landslide at Ngaizel on the southern outskirts of Aizawl, affecting the movement of vehicles and essential supplies.

State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma visited the landslide-affected Ngaizel area on Thursday to assess the situation. During the visit, he urged residents to remain alert as persistent rainfall continues to pose the risk of floods and landslides across Mizoram.

The minister assured affected families that financial assistance and relief would be provided promptly and transparently in accordance with government norms. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation closely while restoration of road connectivity and relief operations remain underway.
