A year after being placed under a Governor’s rule, the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) on Wednesday got a new government with the induction of BJP leader Nirupam Chakma.
The new executive body was jointly formed by state’s ruling party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and the BJP.
Chakma took oath as the new Chief Executive Member of the CADC during a swearing-in ceremony held at the council’s arts and cultural hall in Kamalanagar on Wednesday following his appointment by the Governor on July 3.
Under the terms of his appointment, he must prove his majority on the floor of the council within seven days. Officials confirmed that a floor test has been scheduled for July 9.
The swearing-in event was attended by several high-profile dignitaries, including District Council and Minority Affairs Minister C. Lalsawivunga, BJP Mizoram unit president Dr. K. Beichhua (MLA), and BJP Mizoram state in-charge Debesh Kumar, alongside CADC members and senior officials.
The transition follows a political alliance forged on June 23, when the state’s ruling ZPM and the BJP formally established the Chakma Democratic Alliance Legislature Party.
Headed by Nirupam Chakma, the alliance subsequently staked a claim to form the executive body in the CADC.
In the 20-member council, the BJP currently holds 10 seats, while the ZPM holds nine.
Chakma brings significant political experience to the role, having previously been elected to the state Assembly and serving as a Minister of State between 1989 and 1998, where he handled several portfolios.
Speaking at the ceremony, Chakma described his swearing-in as the beginning of a new chapter for the Chakma Council.
He pledged to lead an administration rooted in transparency, accountability, and dedication, prioritizing infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture, job creation, and public service delivery.
He also urged elected representatives, civil society organizations, and the public to collaborate on the region’s development.
The CADC was originally placed under Governor’s rule for a one-year period between July 7, 2025, and July 7, 2026, following prolonged political instability caused by frequent leadership changes.
The withdrawal of the Governor’s rule paves the way for the new joint coalition executive body to govern.
