The Mizoram government has imposed a ban on single-use plastic at seven tourist spots in Aizawl district.
These tourist sites are Lalsavunga Park, Falkawn Zokhua, Sakawrhmuituai Tlang, Hmuifang Tlang, Khawhpawp, Lawipu, Sairang Railway Station, and Sialsuk Tlang.
In order to prevent littering and plastic pollution and to ensure effective implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the use, sale, distribution and storage of single-use plastic (SUP) items within the above-mentioned tourist sites are prohibited with immediate effect, a notification issued by the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner stated.
All visitors, vendors, shopkeepers and other stakeholders are directed to use environmentally friendly and reusable alternatives. Compliance with this order shall be ensured by the Nodal Officer and Sanitation Officer on Single-Use Plastic Enforcement through the SUP Enforcement Team.
Any violation of this order shall attract action under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016, and other applicable laws and regulations.
The ban was imposed in pursuance of the order dated May 5, 2026 of the Supreme Court of India in a case regarding implementation of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, which directed the identification of tourist sites and strengthening of waste management measures at such locations.
