Ruling Zoram People’s Movement
(ZPM) candidate Khiangte Laltluangkima was elected as the new Rajya Sabha MP from Mizoram today.
A total of 36 out of 40 MLAs of the Mizoram Legislative Assembly voted at the Conference Hall of Mizoram Legislative Assembly Secretariat (Annexe building) to elect the lone Rajya Sabha member from the state. Laltluangkima secured 26 of the 36 votes polled, defeating Zothansangi Hmar of the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), who received all 10 votes cast by her party’s legislators.
Zothansanga Ralte, Commissioner and Secretary, Mizoram Legislative Assembly and Returning Officer for the poll announced the election of Laltluangkima to the Rajya Sabha.
With Laltluangkima’s election, ZPM secured its first-ever representation in the Rajya Sabha.
Three legislators abstained from voting, including BJP MLAs K Beichhua and K Hrahmo, as well as lone Congress legislator C Ngunlianchunga, while ZPM legislator from Tuichang constituency, W. Chhuanawma, could not participate in the poll due to health issues.
