Three people from Assam’s Sribhumi district were killed and two others were injured after the car they were travelling in rammed into a stationary truck in Mizoram’s Kolasib town on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Saddam Hussain, 27, son of Suleman Ali of Hogargoal village, Patharkandi, Sribhumi; Masuk Ahmed, 25, son of Riyaz Uddin of Gulchara Kajitilla; and Khaled Ahmed, 19, son of Moiz Uddin, also from the same area.
The accident occurred on National Highway-306, linking Mizoram with Assam’s Silchar town, when the car was travelling towards Aizawl, they said.
The car, which bore an Assam registration number, crashed into a truck parked along the roadside, a police officer said.
According to police, the vehicle rammed into a truck parked along the roadside with such force that the truck was pushed more than 50 metres from the point of impact.
A rescue operation was launched immediately by police personnel with assistance from volunteers of the Young Mizo Association (YMA).
Two occupants of the car were pulled out alive, while the bodies of the three others trapped inside the mangled vehicle were later recovered. Police are investigating the incident.
