Ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) on Monday registered its first victory in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) polls bagging 17 out of 19 seats.
Counting for the 19-member municipal body was held in Aizawl Deputy Commissioner office under a peaceful atmosphere.
According to the urban body polls results declared by Mizoram State Election Commission on Monday, main opposition Mizo National Front (MNF), and Congress won 1 seat each.
ZPM, which won 5 seats in the last AMC polls in 2021, won a thumping victory raising its tally to 17 this time to unseat incumbent MNF, which won 11 seats in the last polls.
The ZPM, MNF and Congress had fielded 19 candidates each.
The BJP, which contested 11 seats, drew a blank.
The AMC was established in 2010 under the Mizoram Municipalities Act, 2007.
There are 19 wards in the municipality body, of which 6 wards are reserved for women.
All the reserved seats were taken by the ZPM in the current polls.
The first AMC polls held in 2010 were won by Congress, while the subsequent two elections in 2015 and 2021 were swept by MNF.
A total of 62.77 per cent turnout out of 2.39 lakh voters was recorded in the civic polls held on April 21.
