Jio Platforms Ltd, the telecom and digital business arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, has created global primary market history by attracting record-breaking investor demand worth ₹7.4 lakh crore on the final day of its initial public offer (IPO). Positioned as arguably India’s most successful public issue to date, the ₹30,213 crore offering was subscribed 22.19 times overall, successfully navigating a subdued domestic secondary market. The offer generated widespread enthusiasm across global institutional investors, drawing bids from sovereign and private giants like Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, BlackRock, and Fidelity, alongside major domestic financial institutions including LIC, SBI, HDFC, and ICICI. Demonstrating unprecedented participation, retail investors submitted bids worth nearly ₹26,000 crore, pushing the retail quota to 2.72 times subscription. In total, the issue received 1.38 crore applications—the highest ever recorded globally for any IPO, surpassing the 9.4 million retail accounts registered by Chinese memory chipmaker CXMT during its $8.6 billion offering earlier this year. Fixed at the upper price band of ₹1,119 per share, Jio Platforms commands a market valuation of ₹10.3 lakh crore ($109 billion). Upon trading commencement on October 28, this valuation elevates Jio into the top three Indian companies by market capitalization, while propelling the parent Reliance group past the Tata group to become India’s largest corporate conglomerate by aggregate listed market value. The landmark flotation builds on long-term investor confidence previously anchored by global tech leaders Meta Platforms and Google, both of which acquired stakes during a $20 billion private funding round in 2020. The IPO demonstrated remarkable momentum early on, reaching full subscription within just 100 minutes of opening—a stark departure from conventional Indian IPO book-building trends where institutional bids concentrate in the final hours. Coincidentally concluding on the birthday of Akash Ambani, managing director of JPL who sits on the board alongside Isha, Anant, and Mukesh Ambani, the issue marks a major milestone for the enterprise. Since launching commercial telecom services in 2016 with disruptive free voice and data offerings, Jio has grown to serve 53.3 crore subscribers, ranking second globally only to China Mobile on a single-country basis. Looking beyond traditional mobile connectivity, Jio Platforms is now targeting its next growth frontier by aiming to connect 10 crore households with high-speed broadband while capturing a substantial share of India’s estimated $56-billion enterprise digital services sector.
