The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested two Kuki student leaders from Manipur in Mizoram’s Aizawl, an official said on September 25.
The two student leaders were detained from a hotel in the Khatla area of Aizawl on Thursday. Their arrest came hours after the NIA, with assistance from the Assam Rifles, apprehended United Kuki National Army (UKNA) chief Thangkhomang Haokip and his driver on the outskirts of the Mizoram capital.
According to the official, the two student leaders, along with Haokip and his driver, are currently in NIA custody.
Haokip was apprehended in connection with cases registered against him in Manipur. However, the authorities have not immediately provided details of the specific cases or charges in which the two Kuki student leaders are allegedly involved.
The arrests took place in Aizawl amid an ongoing investigation by the central agency into cases linked to Manipur.
The NIA operation involving Haokip and his driver was carried out on the outskirts of Aizawl with assistance from Assam Rifles. The subsequent detention of the two student leaders at a hotel in Khatla followed the earlier operation.
The official also clarified that the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB), which had earlier been reported to have participated in the operation, was not involved in the arrests.
Further details about the identities of the two student leaders, the cases against them and the circumstances leading to their detention were not immediately available.
