Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis has issued an urgent call to action, warning that Artificial General Intelligence—AI that matches or exceeds human cognitive capabilities—could become a reality within just a few short years. The Nobel laureate stated that humanity has a remarkably narrow window to implement robust safety measures before these advanced, recursively self-improving systems reshape society. While Hassabis emphasizes that the dawn of human-level AI could trigger unprecedented breakthroughs in medicine, clean energy, and scientific research, he cautions that the current global landscape is dangerously skewed toward a corporate and geopolitical arms race rather than threat mitigation. As frontier AI models grow exponentially more capable, they introduce critical vulnerabilities, including heightened cybersecurity breaches and potential catastrophic biosecurity or nuclear risks.

To prevent these technologies from slipping out of human control, Hassabis is proposing the immediate creation of a dedicated, industry-funded global watchdog modeled after Wall Street’s financial regulatory authorities. Under this framework, AI developers would face mandatory testing and safety benchmarks, requiring them to submit their most advanced models for rigorous evaluation before public deployment. The tech pioneer argues that while experts remain divided on the exact evolutionary trajectory of superhuman intelligence, this systemic uncertainty should serve as a catalyst for immediate caution rather than political delay. By establishing these regulatory guardrails today, international policymakers can ensure that the transition into this new technological era fosters widespread human flourishing rather than existential instability.
