In a renewed push against drug trafficking and substance abuse ahead of the festive season, the Mizoram Government on Friday launched Operation Jericho 2, a statewide anti-narcotics initiative aimed at intensifying enforcement and disrupting drug trafficking networks operating across the state.

The operation was officially launched by Director General of Police (DGP) Sharad Agarwal at a function held at the Multipurpose Hall of the Police Headquarters (PHQ) on October 30, 2026. The campaign will come into effect from November 1, 2026.

Operation Jericho 2 seeks to strengthen anti-drug enforcement, prevent the entry and movement of illicit narcotics, and dismantle organised trafficking networks. The initiative builds upon the success of the original Operation Jericho, which was launched on September 1, 2025, through a joint effort involving the Mizoram Police, the Excise & Narcotics Department, and the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA).

As part of the first phase, police personnel were deployed in 22 villages along the Myanmar border in Champhai district. Working closely with district police, civil society groups, Village Defence Parties (VDPs), and local YMA branches, security personnel carried out sustained operations to curb drug smuggling and disrupt trafficking routes.

The campaign produced significant results. By March 31, 2026, when the special deployment was withdrawn, authorities had seized narcotics worth approximately ₹391.95 crore, registered 203 cases, and arrested 298 individuals. Despite the withdrawal of the dedicated deployment, anti-drug operations continued under the supervision of district police authorities.

According to official figures, enforcement efforts under Operation Jericho have continued to yield substantial results. As of October 26, 2026, authorities had registered a total of 447 cases, arrested 663 persons, and seized narcotics valued at approximately ₹843.47 crore.

The state government said these achievements reflect the commitment of law enforcement agencies and civil society organisations in combating the illegal drug trade and bringing traffickers to justice.

To further strengthen the campaign during the festive season, personnel from the 1st Battalion MAP, 3rd Battalion MAP, 1st IR Battalion, and 5th IR Battalion will be deployed under Operation Jericho 2. The operation will be carried out under the supervision of respective District Superintendents of Police in coordination with civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

Special emphasis will be placed on border districts due to their strategic importance in preventing the entry, transit, and distribution of illegal drugs. The operation will focus on intelligence-led enforcement, enhanced inter-agency coordination, improved border surveillance, and active community participation.

The government stressed that the support of NGOs, YMA, VDPs, and other civil society organisations remains crucial for ensuring long-term success. It has appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and promptly share any information related to drug trafficking with the police.

Officials said the collective efforts of law enforcement agencies and the public would be key to safeguarding Mizoram from the growing threat of narcotics and ensuring a drug-free society.
