The Mizoram government has launched an ambitious initiative to overhaul its sports ecosystem, focusing heavily on grassroots development with the ultimate goal of producing future Olympic champions.

Speaking at the inauguration of the P C Gabriel Lalliansanga Memorial MBA Junior Official Badminton Championship, Mizoram Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar announced a strategic restructuring of the state’s sports program. The government has identified eight specific Olympic disciplines where Mizo athletes have traditionally demonstrated immense potential: archery, badminton, boxing, hockey, judo, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling.

Minister Hmar urged young athletes to look beyond regional competitions and cultivate a true “Olympic vision.” He emphasized that with systematic training, sustained government support, and structured development programs, Mizoram could significantly elevate its standing on both national and international platforms.

The minister particularly praised the state’s rapid progress in badminton. Mizoram has recently produced a remarkable pool of talent and champions in the junior and sub-junior categories, proving that the state can nurture elite-level competitors when given the right resources.

Beyond podium finishes, Hmar highlighted the holistic benefits of athletics, describing sports as an invaluable “medicine” that fosters both physical and mental well-being among the youth. By combining targeted elite training with widespread grassroots participation, Mizoram aims to build a healthier society while charting a definitive path toward Olympic glory.
