The Mizoram Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the SELCO Foundation on Thursday to solarise and upgrade the infrastructure of 300 Anganwadi Centres (AWCs) across the state.
The agreement was signed the Department’s Commissioner and Secretary, Lalzarmawii, and SELCO Foundation Senior Project Manager Lalnuntluanga, in the presence of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development Minister, Lalrinpuii.
Speaking at the event, Minister Lalrinpuii highlighted the state government’s commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and well-equipped environment for early childhood development.
She expressed optimism that integrating sustainable energy into the AWCs will significantly improve service delivery for women and children in Mizoram.
She also urged department officials to conduct frequent field visits to ensure effective implementation.
The two-year project aims to utilize Decentralised Renewable Energy (DRE) solutions to modernize the centres, particularly benefiting remote communities.
According to SELCO Project Manager Laltanpuia, the solarization project is targeted for completion by December 2026.
To ensure the long-term sustainability of the initiative, Anganwadi Workers (AWW), Helpers (AWH), and government officials will receive specialised training on operating and maintaining the solar systems.
Additionally, 10 ‘Saksham Anganwadi Centres’ will be developed as model demonstration units for the state.
