The Mizoram government suspended a transport officer on Thursday for giving driver’s licenses unlawfully. The Central Young Mizo Association filed a complaint alleging that driving and learner licences were fraudulently issued by the Aizawl District Transport Office. According to an order issued by transport department secretary Lalengthanga Hnamte, the district transport officer has been suspended with immediate effect for alleged involvement in these illicit actions.
The order also noted that disciplinary measures are being considered against Hnamte, and an investigation is underway. On Wednesday, CYMA leaders met with Transport Minister Vanlalhlana to report the suspected improper issue of licences by Aizawl DTO. The organization stated that it proved these illegal actions by questioning local residents and refugees, who admitted to having driving licenses issued improperly by the DTO.
But CYMA calming that some people lacked the requisite papers to apply for a driver’s license, would approach middlemen and pay them for their help. The middlemen then bribed DTO workers who issued the licenses.
