Ram Sutar, a renowned Indian sculptor whose works include the Statue of Unity in Gujarat, passed away at home in Noida. He was one hundred years old. The sculptor’s son, Anil Sutar, confirmed the news. “It is with profound grief that we inform you of the passing of my father, Shri Ram Vanji Sutar, on the night of 17th December at our residence,” he said. He has been dealing with aging-related health issues. Renowned for his proficiency with metal and stone, he created some of the nation’s most famous monuments and statues, garnering admiration from both local and international viewers. His sculptures have inspired many generations of artists in addition to having an impact on India’s artistic landscape.
Assam’s chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, also paid tribute to Sutar and highlighted his achievements to the state. On February 19, 1925, Ram Sutar was born in Gondur village, Dhule district, Maharashtra. The prestigious JJ School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai awarded him a gold medal. Throughout his life, he received numerous accolades, like as the Padma Shri in 1999, the Padma Bhushan in 2016, and the Bhushan Puraskar, Maharashtra’s highest civilian award. Ram Sutar’s legacy as a sculptor of artistic brilliance and patriotism will inspire generations in India and beyond.
