An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was seriously injured after being struck by a scooty that allegedly attempted to evade a police vehicle-checking operation in Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, early on Friday.
The incident took place around 1:30 a.m. in the Urkaliar area, where police were conducting routine checks as part of efforts to maintain law and order.
The injured officer, Lovish Garg, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) for East Khasi Hills district, was rushed to a hospital and later shifted to a specialized ward. He underwent minor surgery and remains under medical observation.
According to Shillong City Superintendent of Police Dangsan Khyriem, two men riding a scooty tried to avoid the checkpoint and continued riding aggressively despite police instructions to stop.
“To prevent their escape, the ASP intervened and signalled the rider to stop. However, instead of stopping, the scooty accelerated and hit the officer, causing him serious injuries,” Khyriem said.
Police have arrested both accused and taken them into custody. Investigators believe the act was deliberate and intended to inflict serious harm on the officer while facilitating their escape from the checkpoint.
Authorities suspect the two individuals may be members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU). Police are investigating their movements at that hour and the reasons behind their attempt to flee. A case of attempted murder has been registered.
Police reiterated that vehicle-checking operations will continue in the interest of public safety and maintaining law and order. Officials warned that anyone attempting to evade lawful police checks or disregard instructions from on-duty personnel would face strict legal action.
Security checks in Shillong have been intensified in recent weeks following a series of petrol bomb attacks targeting police stations, government establishments, and public property.
The heightened security measures also come in the wake of violence that erupted during a KSU-organized “black flag bike rally” on August 19. Several vehicles, particularly those registered in neighboring Assam, and a number of individuals were attacked during the unrest. Subsequently, police arrested six KSU leaders in connection with the incidents.
