Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday inaugurated development projects worth Rs 5 crore at Government Champhai College that were implemented under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA) scheme.
The projects include a classroom building costing Rs 3.70 crore, renovation of the Multipurpose Hall at Rs 40 lakh, a semi-running track at Rs 40 lakh, and a Rs 50 lakh package covering a solar plant, vocational skill and personality development programmes, workshops, IT and laboratory equipment, and solar equipment.
Government Champhai College is one of two colleges in Mizoram selected under the first phase of PM-USHA.
The project commenced on February 12, 2025 and was completed on July 15, 2026 within the stipulated timeframe.
The inauguration coincided with the closing ceremony of College Week 2026.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister recalled that he belonged to the first batch of Government Champhai College and used to attend evening classes, studying by the light of a traditional oil lamp. He expressed pride in the college’s progress and noted that it had become one of Mizoram’s government multidisciplinary colleges offering the widest range of academic streams. Given its spacious campus, he said, it could potentially develop into a university campus when Mizoram State University becomes fully established.
He also announced that Rs 50 lakh had recently been approved for extending the college hostel and assured support for the construction of a retaining wall and parade ground.
On strengthening academic capacity, the Chief Minister said that four Assistant Professors had been appointed under RUSA and another four for the BCA programme. Three contractual faculty members had also been engaged, while orders had been finalised to regularise the services of existing faculty members under the relevant arrangement. These initiatives, he said, reflected the government’s commitment to higher education and the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The Chief Minister also highlighted major development initiatives in Champhai district, including a Working Women’s Hostel at Tlangrawt, infrastructure development at the District Jail, road widening and improvement works, and the New Champhai Sports Complex.
Under Swadesh Darshan 2.0, four Eco Resort Experience sites at Keilungliah, Zote, Ngur and Mualbuhvuma are being developed. A Heritage and Cultural Centre is proposed at Champhai Vengthlang at a cost of Rs 33.87 crore. The installation of a passion fruit processing machine at New Champhai is nearing completion.
He further informed that Rs 30.13 crore had been sanctioned by the Ministry of DoNER through the North Eastern Council (NEC) for four ginger-processing units at Mualkawi, Tualcheng, Zotlang and Vaphai under the Ginger USP Project, aimed at sustainable ginger cultivation and value chain development.
Under the Bana Kaih decentralised plan, five initiatives are being implemented under the supervision of the Deputy Commissioner, Champhai: Project Sunsilk, Project Greenshield, Project LEAD, Project RISE and a district mobile application.
