The counting of votes for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections is currently underway, with early trends indicating a strong start for the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). The process, which began promptly at 8 a.m. at the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner’s office on Monday, is proceeding in a peaceful and orderly manner under strict security guidelines.

Mizoram State Election Commissioner Dr. H. Lalthlangliana confirmed that, according to initial rounds of counting, ZPM candidates have established leads in five wards. While these early trends provide a glimpse into the electorate’s inclination, outcomes for the remaining 14 wards are still being tabulated, with updates expected to be released throughout the day.

The stakes for this election are significant, as the result will determine control of the municipal body, which has been under the leadership of the Mizo National Front (MNF) since their victory in the 2021 civic polls. The election, held on April 21, saw active participation from the capital’s residents, recording a voter turnout of 62.77 per cent. Approximately 2.39 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise to choose from a pool of 68 candidates, including 28 women.

The electoral landscape has been highly competitive, with major political players pulling out all the stops. The ZPM, Mizo National Front (MNF), and the Congress each fielded 19 candidates, ensuring a contest in every ward, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated 11 candidates.

As the day progresses, election authorities have assured that all procedural guidelines are being strictly followed to maintain the transparency and integrity of the process. All eyes remain on the Aizawl Deputy Commissioner’s office as the final tallies are expected to decide the future governance of the city’s civic body. Further updates will be provided as more results are declared.
