80 Unfinished SAGY Projects to Be Abandoned in Mizoram

The Mizoram government has decided to abandon 80 incomplete projects under the Sansad Adharsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), following a meeting of the State Level Empowered Committee (SLEC) chaired by Chief Secretary Khilli Ram Meena in Aizawl. SAGY, launched by the Government of India in October 2014, assigns Members of Parliament (MPs) the role of developing infrastructure in villages. Initially, each MP was expected to adopt one Gram Panchayat (GP) to develop it into a model village by 2016, then two more by 2019, and subsequently one each year until 2024. In Mizoram, SAGY was implemented in 2014, with 14 GPs designated as Adarsh Grams by the respective MPs. These GPs created Village Development Plans (VDPs) that included 816 projects spanning various development areas, including infrastructure, education, health, livelihood, sanitation, and social inclusion, with the aim of completing all interventions by 2024. However, the abandonment of the 80 projects occurred due to challenges such as overambitious planning, funding issues, and limitations of departmental schemes, which hindered their completion within the set timeline.
