Mizoram Police has formed a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged murder of a 15-year-old girl in Lunglei district, whose body was found at a government middle school two days after she went missing.The teenager, a resident of Mualthuam North, reportedly left her home at around 8.30 pm on August 3 and did not return. Following an extensive search by local residents, her body was found at around 10.20 am on August 5 on the premises of a government-run middle school in Mualthuam North.Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) H Ramthlengliana said police had registered a case at Lunglei police station under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to murder and Section 140(1) concerning kidnapping.
Police and forensic teams reached the spot after the body was recovered and began collecting evidence from the scene. An inquest was also conducted as part of the investigation. The girl’s post-mortem examination was subsequently carried out at Lunglei Civil Hospital on Thursday.The SIT is headed by Lunglei Sub-Divisional Police Officer R Lalthankima. The team has been deployed in the village and will conduct a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl’s death, police said.No arrests have been made so far. Police said efforts were continuing to identify those responsible and apprehend them.Authorities have also appealed to residents to cooperate with the investigation and avoid circulating unverified information or rumours about the case. People who have credible information that could assist investigators have been urged to approach the authorities.
The incident has drawn concern across the state, with Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Education Minister Vanlalthlana condemning the girl’s death and calling for swift action. Lalduhoma expressed grief over the incident and said those responsible must be identified and brought to justice without delay. He also appealed to the public to assist the police so that those involved could be apprehended at the earliest.
