Members of the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) are set to meet Mizoram Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati on Monday at Raj Bhavan to formally stake their claim to form the government in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).

The ZPM gained a majority in the 20-member council after five members of the Mizo National Front (MNF) defected to the party last week. This political shift came shortly after a no-confidence motion ousted Chief Executive Member (CEM) Rasik Mohan Chakma of the MNF during a council session on December 11.

The MNF, which had initially secured 10 seats to form the 11th CADC following the May 2023 elections, now retains only one seat held by Rasik Mohan Chakma. The council is currently composed of 10 members from the ZPM, nine from the BJP, and one from the MNF.

The ZPM’s meeting with the Governor is expected to pave the way for a new administration, marking a significant political realignment in the CADC. The developments underline the evolving political landscape in Mizoram’s autonomous councils, with potential implications for regional governance and alliances.
