The Commando Unit of Imphal East District (CDO/Imphal East) arrested two alleged active members of the SOREPA in connection with an alleged extortion attempt at Khurai Thangjam Leikai on August 24, security officials said.

The two arrested persons have been identified as Laitonjam Rocky Singh, also known as Khutan, 37, and Pukhrambam Kumarjit Singh, 36.

According to security forces, the arrests were made following specific intelligence inputs suggesting that the two men had allegedly gone to the locality to collect extortion money.

Acting on the information, CDO/Imphal East launched an operation in the area. The intelligence input was corroborated by personnel of the 28 Assam Rifles, following which the two suspects were apprehended.

Security forces said a handwritten slip allegedly linked to the extortion attempt was recovered from their possession. The slip reportedly carried a mobile phone number and the name “SOREPA”.

Officials alleged that the two men had reached Khurai Thangjam Leikai with the intention of collecting money through extortion.

Further investigation is underway to ascertain the details of the alleged extortion attempt and to determine whether any other individuals were involved in the case, officials said.

The arrested persons are being dealt with in accordance with the ongoing investigation, while security agencies continue to examine the material seized during the operation.
