Tensions ran high in Mizoram’s Champhai district on July 4 as a large group of residents, led by the Young Mizo Association (YMA), staged a protest outside the Champhai police station. The demonstrators expressed deep frustration over the recent release on bail of nine individuals accused in the alleged murder of a local youth, citing serious lapses in police procedure.

The protest erupted after it came to light that all nine accused had been granted bail due to the failure of police to file a chargesheet within 90 days, as mandated under the law. The delay, protestors claimed, amounted to gross negligence and had undermined public trust in law enforcement.

The case dates back to March 29, when Pausianmuanga, a 28-year-old resident of Bethel Veng, died after sustaining injuries during a violent altercation at a football ground in Champhai. Eyewitnesses stated that he fell from a pavilion during the scuffle. Although he was immediately rushed to a hospital, he later succumbed to his injuries.

In the days following the incident, Champhai police arrested nine individuals allegedly involved in the altercation. One of them, Lalruatthara, had surrendered voluntarily at the police station on the same day, according to officials. However, months later, the police’s failure to file the chargesheet within the stipulated timeframe allowed all nine to secure bail—sparking outrage among local residents.

“We feel deeply betrayed. The system has failed us. The officer in charge appears to be dragging his feet, and we suspect it’s because the victim came from a poor family,” said a demonstrator who joined the protest outside the station. “This is not just about justice for Pausianmuanga, it’s about ensuring such delays don’t happen again.”

Placards demanding accountability and justice were seen as YMA members joined residents in criticizing the authorities. The protestors alleged that the lack of urgency shown by the police reflected systemic bias and a disregard for the rights of marginalized communities.

Champhai police, so far, have not issued a formal statement explaining the delay in filing the chargesheet. However, sources within the police department suggest that investigation gaps and procedural lapses may have contributed to the setback.
