President Droupadi Murmu’s leadership in the Indian delegation attending the State Funeral of Pope Francis has not only reinforced India’s diplomatic ties but also stirred economic activity in the religious goods sector. Accompanied by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, Shri Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State for Minority Affairs, Shri George Kurian, and Deputy Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Shri Joshua De Souza, President Murmu attended the funeral held on April 26, following Pope Francis’ passing on April 21, 2025.

In the wake of Pope Francis’ death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared three days of State Mourning, reflecting India’s solidarity with the global Catholic community. The mourning period has led to an increase in consumer demand for religious memorabilia, particularly items such as rosaries, candles, and statues associated with Pope Francis, influencing retail trends.
