Households in Mizoram are projected to gain access to piped natural gas (PNG) by the first half of 2028, following significant progress under the Centre’s energy expansion programme. The 119.5-km pipeline, constructed by Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL) as part of the Northeast Natural Gas Pipeline project, has reached 45% completion and is slated for completion by December 2027. This pipeline will integrate Mizoram into the national gas grid network, with Aizawl and Mamit anticipated to be the initial recipients of PNG once operational. Mizoram’s Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs Minister, B. Lalchhanzova, confirmed that the pipeline segment extending to Sihhmui in Tripura is expected to be finalized by March 2027, after which Tripura Natural Gas Company Ltd (TNGCL) will start developing the city gas distribution network for households. The project is on course to be fully operational by early 2028, leveraging Tripura’s established experience with PNG, which has served over 60,000 consumers for three decades, including commercial establishments. Lalchhanzova has been studying operational models by inspecting gas infrastructure in Agartala to inform Mizoram’s gas supply initiatives.
