National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Special Rapporteur Sayeed Ahmed Baba has called for greater awareness of human rights and stronger counselling and de-addiction support for people affected by substance abuse, particularly young people in Mizoram’s Saitual district. Addressing a meeting with heads of government departments, Baba highlighted the NHRC’s role in protecting and promoting the rights of every individual and stressed that government officials have a responsibility to ensure that people’s rights are respected in the delivery of public services. He said visits by NHRC representatives are aimed at understanding local conditions and identifying effective initiatives and practices that can be adopted or strengthened. Saitual District Commissioner Srinivas Sadi presented an overview of the district and assured that the recommendations made by the NHRC rapporteur would be followed up as far as possible. During his two-day visit, Baba inspected several institutions and facilities, including PM Shri School, Primary School-II, an Anganwadi Centre, the Eklavya Model Residential School at Ngopa and a ginger processing unit at Hliappui. He also visited the One Stop Centre, police station and district hospital in Saitual before travelling to Champhai. The visit focused on assessing local public institutions and services while encouraging stronger measures to protect human rights and support vulnerable sections of society.
