The fifth batch training of Yuva Aapda Mitra, conducted jointly by the Mizoram Disaster Management & Rehabilitation (DM&R) Department and the 1st Mizo Battalion, National Cadet Corps (NCC), formally concluded today at the Mizoram Scouts & Guides Training Centre, Tanhril in Aizawl.

Addressing the closing ceremony, Minister for Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Prof. Lalnilawma lauded the close cooperation between the DM&R Department and the 1st Mizo Battalion NCC in the areas of disaster prevention and response. He described the coordination as commendable and assured that even stronger collaboration would be pursued in the future.

The Minister observed that natural disasters occur beyond human control and that everyone remains vulnerable to such events. However, he emphasised that preparedness and advance planning are well within human capacity. Highlighting the importance of acquiring proper disaster response skills, he said such knowledge is vital for saving lives and reducing damage during emergencies.

Prof. Lalnilawma also expressed appreciation for the spirit of service displayed by NCC cadets and volunteers, noting their readiness to step forward and assist others during disasters.

The 5th batch training was successfully completed by 112 NCC cadets drawn from nine colleges: Govt. Mamit College, Govt. Kolasib College, Govt. Serchhip College, Lunglei Govt. College, Govt. Khawzawl College, Kamalanagar Govt. College, Govt. Siaha College, Hatim College, and Govt. J.B. College.

The Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme aims to train youth volunteers at the community level to undertake immediate rescue and relief operations during disasters, even before external assistance reaches affected areas. Currently, training programmes under the scheme are being implemented in Lunglei, Champhai, Kolasib, Serchhip, and Mamit districts.

With the conclusion of Tuesday’s programme, a total of 531 youths from NCC, NYKS, Bharat Scouts & Guides, and NSS have been trained so far under the scheme.

The closing ceremony was attended by Udit Prakash Rai, Secretary, Chuauhnuna, Director, and Francis Lallawmkima, Joint Director (Operations) from the DM&R Department. From the NCC, Brigadier G.S. Arora, Lt. Col. Ranjit Chandel, and other officials were also present.
