The recent introduction of Mizoram’s Electric Vehicle Policy, effective from September 10, has stirred a public outcry, with citizens expressing concern over its impact on traditional vehicle owners. The policy, designed to promote electric vehicles (EVs), exempts them from Aizawl’s long-standing odd-even traffic system, allowing EVs to operate daily, unlike conventional vehicles, which are restricted to alternate days.
In addition to this exemption, the policy offers further incentives, such as priority registration for electric vehicles and reserved parking spaces in key city areas, aiming to encourage the use of EVs, especially electric scooters that are gaining popularity in Aizawl. However, this preferential treatment has sparked widespread criticism, particularly on social media, where many argue that the policy creates an unfair advantage for EV owners while disrupting the city’s established traffic management.
The situation intensified when MST Motors (Ather), the state’s only electric scooter dealer, released a promotional flyer with the tagline “Let’s wave Bye Bye to no plying days,” which many viewed as dismissive of the concerns of conventional vehicle owners, adding to the growing public frustration.
