Mizoram Governor General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh (Retd) on Thursday led the Green Mizoram Day 2026 plantation drive by planting a sapling of Herhse (Mesua ferrea), the state tree of Mizoram, at the Upper Lawn of Lok Bhavan in Aizawl. The plantation programme was organised as part of the state’s annual Green Mizoram Day initiative, which promotes environmental conservation and encourages citizens to participate in large-scale tree plantation activities. Following the Governor’s lead, officers and staff members of the Governor’s Secretariat also planted saplings at the venue. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Singh praised Mizoram’s annual mass plantation campaign and called upon people across the state to actively participate in tree-planting activities throughout the current planting season.

He urged citizens not to confine their efforts to a single day but to continue planting saplings during the monsoon months when conditions are favourable for their growth. Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, the Governor said Mizoram continues to enjoy rich forest cover and a healthy ecosystem, which play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. He noted that forests help regulate climate, purify the air and sustain the water cycle, making them essential for both environmental and human well-being. Referring to the growing challenges posed by climate change, the Governor stressed the need for collective efforts to protect and preserve natural resources. He appealed to the people of the state to take responsibility for safeguarding forests and maintaining Mizoram’s environmental heritage for future generations. The Governor also emphasised that plantation efforts should not end with the planting of saplings. He encouraged participants to ensure proper care, protection and maintenance of the young plants so that they can grow into healthy and mature trees.

“Planting a sapling is only the first step. Its survival and growth depend on continuous care and commitment,” he said while interacting with participants.Among those present at the programme were Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor Vinod P. Kavle, Divisional Forest Officer of Aizawl Forest Division Lalnunsanga Khawlhring, Joint Secretary to the Governor K. Laltlawmlova, officials of the Governor’s Secretariat and personnel from the Environment, Forests and Climate Change Department. Green Mizoram Day is observed annually across the state with the objective of increasing green cover, raising environmental awareness and encouraging community participation in conservation activities. The initiative has become an important part of Mizoram’s efforts to preserve its rich biodiversity and strengthen environmental sustainability.
