The Mizoram government is advocating for the restoration of democratic governance in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) by terminating the Governor’s Rule, which has been in place since July 7 of the previous year. This imposition occurred despite the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) legislature party claiming the right to form an executive committee, supported by a majority of 16 members in the 20-member council. During a recent council meeting, the Council of Ministers emphasized that out of 20 Members of District Council (MDC), 16 belong to a party that can legitimately form a government. In light of earlier directives from the High Court to explore all avenues for governmental formation, the Council recommended allowing a government to be established rather than perpetuating the existing Governor’s Rule, which lacks political justification. They highlighted that even after the current term of Governor’s Rule ends, the party’s ability to form a government remains intact. Consequently, the Council of Ministers concluded that extending the Governor’s Rule for an additional six months was unwarranted, expressing confidence that a stable government could be formed in the CADC. The council consists of 24 MDCs, with 20 elected from local constituencies and 4 appointed by the Governor.
