More than 3.2 lakh families have been enrolled under the second phase of Mizoram’s Universal Healthcare Scheme (MUHCS), reflecting the state’s expanding healthcare coverage. Officials said the government has disbursed more than Rs 271 crore towards treatment bills under the first two phases since 2025. The enrolled beneficiaries include 48,091 general beneficiaries, 35,325 government employees, 11,928 pensioners and 2,26,899 people covered under the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), which has been integrated with MUHCS. Under MUHCS 1.0, launched in March 2025, more than one lakh patients received treatment, with Rs 171.57 crore released towards medical expenses, while around 4,772 patients were referred outside Mizoram for treatment. Under MUHCS 2.0, at least 31,832 patients had received treatment by August 24, with Rs 99.60 crore disbursed towards treatment costs. The scheme, introduced by the Zoram People’s Movement government led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, provides cashless treatment at government facilities and empanelled private and church-run hospitals within and outside Mizoram. General beneficiaries can receive health coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh, while government employees are eligible for unlimited coverage based on their contributions. Pensioners and their spouses can avail themselves of up to Rs 2 lakh in annual coverage under the scheme. The programme currently includes state-run facilities, 20 private hospitals and five day-care centres in Mizoram, along with 53 empanelled private hospitals outside the state, broadening access to healthcare for residents.
