The Mizoram Excise and Narcotics Department on September 30 destroyed seized narcotic substances worth ₹11.82 crore at Bethani Multipurpose Farm in Phunchawng on the outskirts of Aizawl.
According to officials, the drugs were confiscated in 106 cases that had already been disposed of by the courts. The destruction was carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The exercise was supervised by Excise and Narcotics Commissioner Z Lalhmangaiha.
Officials said the destroyed contraband included 3.35 kg of heroin valued at ₹10.71 crore, 19.43 kg of ganja worth ₹9.71 lakh, 1.98 kg of methamphetamine valued at ₹19.85 lakh, and 89.9 kg of codeine-based cough syrup worth ₹10.57 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Lalhmangaiha said the destruction drive reflected the collective efforts of the Excise and Narcotics Department, Mizoram Police, the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) and other agencies engaged in the fight against drug trafficking and abuse.
He urged the public to continue supporting the government’s anti-drug initiatives and expressed hope that the volume of seized narcotics requiring destruction would gradually decline in the future.
The destruction of the contraband marks another step in Mizoram’s ongoing efforts to curb the menace of drugs and strengthen enforcement against narcotics-related crimes.
