Mizoram has achieved a major regional milestone by becoming the first state in Northeast India to commission a fish canning facility. The plant was inaugurated in Aizawl by the state’s Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Resources Minister Lalruatkima. Built at a cost of ₹65 lakh at Zawlnuam in Mamit district near the Tripura border, the project aims to strengthen Mizoram’s “blue economy” and promote sustainable fisheries.
The minister said the facility, developed under the Zawlnuam Fishery Cooperative Society, will help local fish farmers by providing better market access and enabling value-addition of smaller fish into processed products. He stressed the importance of maintaining quality control and meeting consumer demand for the industry’s success.
The plant is also expected to boost employment and support the government’s broader vision of strengthening rural infrastructure and economic growth in border and remote areas.
